Great Ponsonby Arthotel | Auckland
The Great Ponsonby Arthotel is a 1890’s villa restored with charm, flair, and green initiative, offering eco-friendly bed and breakfast accommodation - a peaceful base from which to explore New Zealand's largest city - Auckland.
New Zealand owned and hosted, the Great Ponsonby Arthotel is just 2 minutes stroll to Ponsonby’s plethora of cafes, restaurants, arts & crafts galleries, and shops.
It was restored in eco-friendly fashion, using recycled timber and windows where possible, and recycling the roofing as fencing and bricks as paving. Wool insulation in the walls and ceilings, thermally-lined curtains, environmentally effective under-floor natural gas heating with thermostatic control, and the use of fans as opposed to air-conditioning systems are some examples of the initiatives Gerry and Sally have put into place.
Comprising eleven individually designed guestrooms with a range of Pacific and New Zealand artwork, the eco-friendly accommodation choices include courtyard and palm garden studios, villa rooms, and an upstairs penthouse suite. Each room has an en suite bathroom, fluffy towels and bathrobes, and coffee & tea making facilities.
The tiles throughout designed by Jeannie Van der Putten and John Papas, with Pacific designs sandblasted on windows by Cara Dodson - all are well known local artists.
As well as a welcome aperitif on arrival, you've a leisurely breakfast in the dining room or alfresco on the balcony to look forward to, with freshly prepared, cooked options from the blackboard menu plus juices, fresh fruits and plunger coffee or tea choices.
